What to do with a headboard? Simple. Repurpose a headboard into a bench seat for an entry way hall. A simple farmhouse decor idea for a DIY painted bench.

Build Seat Frame

The sturdy seat frame and front legs is built by using scrap pine boards. For the seat height, I used one of our kitchen chairs for that measurement. Quick solution!

Tip: Use scrap wood for projects to keep the costs down.

Sanding & Painting

I used my palm sander for the flat areas and hand sanded the posts. The 100 grit sandpaper is used for those areas.

After sanding the headboard and legs, black primer is sprayed painted on. No need to prime the pine seat support boards because it will be covered up.

The frame and headboard are a painted blue aqua color and sealed with a clear polyacrylic protective finish. The DIY bench seat is becoming a farmhouse entry way decor. The repurposed headboard is a great alternative for a backrest.

Seat Board

I decided to use an old foot board for the seat. The legs are removed from the foot board and used in my Tiny Cabinet Makeover project.

The foot board was cut to size to fit the frame with 1/2 inch overhang on the sides. The board is passed through the drum sander multiple times starting with 100 grit, 120 grit, and 150 grit to get a smooth surface. Love the curved front edge!

The seat was wood stained and lacquered along with the added board in front to match. The seat was attached to the pine frame using 1 1/4″ wood screws. The paint really enhances the decorative lines in the heard board. It turned out beautiful!
